I shouldn’t be surprised at the controversy the Coca Cola Super Bowl commercial generated. Yet, part of me is. Maybe that’s the last shred of naivety in me…maybe I’m just that saddened. Saddened that this is 2014 A.D. Yet people in this country act like it is 214 A.D. How can we say we have evolved as a people, a society, and as human beings when so many are filled with hypocrisy, hate, and ignorance?
The reality is that commercial captured the essence of today’s United States. While many in this country want to pretend otherwise, that commercial is the United States. We are multi-cultural, not assimilated culture. English is our country’s official language, yet we speak different languages. Not everyone is the same color skin. Not everyone is attracted to the opposite sex. This diversity is what makes this country strong…and beautiful.
This diversity is nothing new. It’s been that way since the inception of this country. Yet, it seems a lot of folks today have forgotten their roots. Most don’t have to go too far back into their family tree to find which ancestor immigrated to this country. Which means even those of us that were born in this country are immigrants to some degree! Yet we vilify those today that come to this country for the same reason our ancestors did…the hope for a better life.
When did conservatism become so mean…so hateful? I looked it up, and no definition I came across included hatred and ill-will towards others. So why does today’s conservatism include these negative attributes? I understand the desire to “to maintain the existing or traditional order”. I get “emphasizing respect for traditional institutions”. There’s nothing wrong with either of those. To me, it’s completely natural to want to maintain a way of life that is meaningful and understandable. It’s safe, comfortable, and provides a foundation by which to make sense of the world that we live in.
Yet seemingly for many of those that embrace conservatism, it’s not good enough to just believe in maintaining and emphasizing traditional orders and institutions. No, today’s conservatives have this uncontrollable urge to share their beliefs, often loudly, even if no one wants to hear what they have to say. Even worse, it seems as if today’s conservatives feel they are justified in taking direct action against those that do not believe the same as they do. This direct action is predominately verbal abuse. Sadly, there are some that believe even physical abuse is justified.
The reason why today’s conservatism is so hate-driven is rather simple. It comes down to ignorance and fear. Ignorance that stems from a foundation that draws largely from religious origins. Religion does a great job of bringing like-minded people together. It does an even better job of reinforcing the beliefs of like-minded people. No matter how twisted or radical. All while damning those that are non-believers and/or just “different”.
The reality is while people have had their noses buried in their “Good Book”, the times have been changing in this country. The majority is quickly becoming the minority…and the majority is only now starting to realize this. Rather than embrace the change, today’s conservative spouts their ideology even louder. They turn to their 3000+ year old “God” and “Good Book” for guidance. They enact policy and law in a vain attempt to solidify their power and money…often at the expense of everyone and everything else. All of this is done out of fear…and ignorance.
The Coca Cola Super Bowl commercial served as yet one more reminder of the change that is occurring in this country. And today’s conservatives reacted predictably with their hypocrisy, hate, and ignorance. Glenn Beck asked indignantly, “Why did you [Coca Cola] need that to divide us politically?” Really Mr. Beck? Don’t you, and the rest of your pseudo-pundits like Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, and Alan Colmes, earn your bread and butter by attempting to divide us politically on a daily basis? Not to be outdone, Fox News’ Todd Starnes chose Twitter as his means to spread his hateful and ignorant message. Among other things, he stated that “Coca Cola is the official soft drink of illegals crossing the border.” I don’t know, or care, who Todd Starnes is. However, I think he put to rest any doubts as to what Fox News means by “Fair & Balanced”.
I’m not a big fan of the Corporate Masters. However, my hat’s off to Coca Cola for running their commercial. Yes, it was done for the purpose of profit generation. However, it was done classy and accurately. The reality is this commercial captured the true essence of this country, even if some want to pretend otherwise. While conservatism in itself isn’t a bad thing, sadly today’s conservatives have made it synonymous with hypocrisy, hate, and ignorance. And that is a shame…that no “God” or “Good Book” can atone for.
