Recently, the President of the United States called out certain NFL and NBA players for their selfish, self-entitled actions. The tit-for-tat Twitter exchanges that took place afterwards were rather humorous… rather childish too. Indeed, even LeBron James jumped into the mix with his unsolicited opinions, ultimately calling President Trump a “bum”.
What isn’t humorous is today’s reactions throughout the NFL. In a show of solidarity and support, seemingly entire teams are kneeling during the National Anthem as a show of force against the President’s comments. As games started, camera’s panned over certain players with their arm stretched out, fist clenched tightly, in a power pose of protest and defiance. For the most part, it seems the NFL, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, the National Football League Players Association (NFLPA), and majority of fans all support (and actively encourage) these players right to “freedom of speech” and protest.
However…this fan does not…
There is a time and a place for everything…and the sideline is neither the time nor place for players to display their political beliefs. I don’t give a damn what a player does, thinks, or says off the field. Come game day, all I want is for players to do what they are paid to do…play the game! The very reason I watch sports is to catch a break from our highly politicized world. The very last thing I want to see is some over-paid diva making a political statement.
That brings up the next point…players that protest are nothing more than hypocrites. They protest the very system that enables them to make ridiculous amounts of money playing a child’s game!!! Players seem to think that because they make millions of dollars, their opinions matter. Guess what…it doesn’t!!!! I don’t give a damn what players think!! Their opinions on matters other than the game mean nothing to me! As a fan, all I want players to do is STFU and play the game! Too many players, as well as others in the entertainment industry, abuse their money and position to force their opinions upon others…others that don’t want to hear, or care, what these divas think.
Despite the fact I enjoy watching NFL football, my love of country is stronger. Like hell I will support an entity that actively encourages its workers to disparage Flag and Country. What NFL players fail to realize is in their selfish, self-entitled quest to advance their own personal, political agendas, they are slowly and systematically alienating the very fans that pay their paycheck.
Roger Goodell is quick to fine players that wear patriotic cleats but will stand behind players that blatantly disrespect this country. This too makes Roger Goodell a spineless hypocrite. As of this day, I will not watch another NFL game. More importantly, I will not waste a single cent on NFL “merch”, until Mr. Goodell grows a pair and addresses this issue properly.
Oh…and as for the morally conscious LeBron James…who chased the big money down to Miami? You did, you hypocritical fuck…the only “bum” here is you!
Well…the ultimate “it’s never gonna happen” has happened…Donald Trump is officially the 45th President of the United States of America. For some, this is a time of great rejoice. For others…not so much. Regardless of which side one finds themselves on, life goes on.
While I am leery about what the future brings, I am happy that this moment has finally come. Lately, it seems people have been divided into two camps…those bitching and moaning about Donald Trump winning the presidency and those bitching and moaning about those bitching and moaning about Donald Trump winning the presidency. Both camps are equally annoying (often ignorant)…emotionally draining…and in the end did nothing to change the outcome of what procedurally ensured was going to happen.
I didn’t watch the inauguration. Certainly not out of protest. That whole movement to boycott the inauguration was both silly and absurd (spoiler alert, even if you boycotted the inauguration…Donald Trump was still sworn in as President). My reason for not watching was simple. The inauguration is nothing more than pomp and circumstance, driven by rhetoric. Another opportunity for President Trump to tell us what he’s going to do. Been there, done that…heard it. I’m tired of rhetoric and talk…now is the time for action.
It remains to be seen what that action will be. We’ve heard a lot of promises. If history is any indication though, President Trump will be hard pressed to achieve even a minority of those promises. Certainly, his odds are better with a GOP dominated Congress. However, even that is questionable. It’s no secret that Donald Trump is not a “real” Republican. In addition, we’ve already seen the Grand Obstructionist Party’s inability to lead even when the opportunity is handed to them on a silver platter. Which only serves to make the future that much more uncertain.
The infamous “they” said Donald Trump would never be taken seriously. Yet he was. “They” said the Republican Party would never accept him as one of their candidates. Yet they did (granted begrudgingly). “They” said Donald Trump would never beat the likes of Bush…Rubio…or my favorite story teller (ha!)…Ted “Green Eggs and Ham” Cruz. Yet he did. “They” said Donald Trump would never win the Republican Party nomination. Yet he did. “They” said there’s no way he’s going to beat Hillary Clinton”. But he did. “They” said Donald Trump will never be President of the United States of America. Yet he is.
“They” said President Donald Trump will be the worst President this county has ever had…
So like many here in the United States and around the world, I watched with a mixture of shock, awe, and disbelieve as Donald Trump won the presidency of the United States. The man that would never win the primaries…never win the Republican Party nomination…couldn’t possibly beat the juggernaut politician that is Hillary Clinton…achieved the impossible. As to be expected a lot of folks lost, and still continue to lose, their ever livin’ minds over the reality that Donald Trump is the President-Elect of the United States of America.
I’ll just be blunt…I think the protests/riots that have taken place….and will take place after he’s inaugurated…are asinine. Those that protest/riot are nothing more than slaves to their emotions and are simply wasting their time. The reality is while those that protest/riot like to believe that breaking other people’s shit, blocking traffic, and just being an all-around nuisance is going to change what has happened, the reality is their efforts will change nothing. If anything, these protests/riots will only reinforce the notion that electing Donald Trump as the next president of this country was actually the right decision to make.
At this point, I feel what we should be doing as Americans is taking a good hard look at who we are as a people. Because while we are loathe to admit it, our President is a direct reflection of our collective selves. Up to this point, I feel we’ve been fooling ourselves in electing our recent past presidents. Not to say the presidents of recent yore have been perfect, but each of them have exhibited a certain amount of class, statesmanship, and restraint that well…are traits that we as Americans seem to no longer employ. The reality is by electing Donald Trump, we Americans now have an accurate reflection of who we are collectively…loud, brash, and arrogant.
What has amazed me most is the support that those that have protested have garnered. How brave they are, so many say, for exercising their freedom of speech! Let’s set the record straight…those that have reacted and protested thus far are not brave! These are a people that lack discipline and self-control, and protest only to serve their own misguided self-interests!
I have a better idea…instead of supporting those that have become slaves to their own emotions, let’s laud those that have responded instead of reacted. Kudos to those that have taken a big deep breath and reflected upon what this will mean for our country. The brave ones are not those that break other people’s shit, block traffic, and annoy those that respect and abide by the law. The brave ones are those that engage in meaningful conversation, with those of opposite beliefs, in the hopes of peacefully compromising and finding common ground on the issues that divide us as a Nation.
The reality is Donald Trump is going to be the next President of the United States. For those that can’t accept this…get over it! No amount of recounting or protesting the process is going to change this. No amount of breaking other people’s shit, blocking traffic, and just being an all-around nuisance is going to change this reality. Donald Trump is an accurate reflection of who we are as Americans, no matter how loathe we are to admit it. As Americans, we need to use this time to step back and reflect upon who we are as a people. Instead of supporting those that protest, we need to support those that have taken the time to reflect and are willing to engage in meaningful compromise to fix that which ails this country. Compromise…not ideology…is what will make America great again!!
Up until now, I haven’t written anything about the upcoming presidential election even though there’s certainly been plenty to write about! In the grand scheme of things, I realized there’s no sense wasting time and energy on what has become one great big circus act. How pathetic is it that Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton are the two best choices (that money can buy) to potentially serve as President of the United States? Come November, the American People will get to choose which of the lesser of two evils will lead this country to nowhere.
I really thought Donald Trump had a legitimate chance to pull it off. However, in light of his latest controversy (less than a month before the election…pure coincidence…right Hillary?), I’m hard pressed to believe he can. The fact that he made it this far is pretty remarkable, especially when you consider how much of a piece of shit the man truly is. At the end of the day though, how many chances can a person totally blow before they reap what they sow? I have a feeling this latest transgression will be insurmountable, even for Donald Trump.
Which means barring the completely unexpected, “We the People” are looking at what will be yet another President Clinton in office. That vision, and future it brings, doesn’t look all that bright to me. With Hillary at the helm, we can expect at least four more years of the indifference and ineffectiveness that has come to define our federal government. In fact, I venture to say that indifference and ineffectiveness will only get worse. The illustrious GOP, looking to regroup after its disastrous affair with Donald Trump, will “re-brand” itself and do what it does best…blame someone else for its piss poor decision making! Instead of getting things done, the Grand Obstructionist Party will spend valuable time, effort, and money blaming Hillary Clinton with extra vengeance. As a result, this country will continue to sink even deeper into the quagmire our nation’s “leaders” have already created.
In addition to the indifference and ineffectiveness, I really don’t see where we are going to be any safer under a President Hillary Clinton. In fact, I speculate that as a country, we will be less safe. Hillary Clinton, the poster child of political correctness, has already made it known her desire to allow even more immigrants and refugees into this country. Especially those that are at odds with our way of life and practice the “peaceful” religion of Islam. She wants to do this despite the fact that Western Europe and the United States have witnessed example after example of “innocent” and vetted Islamic immigrants turning on the people and countries that took them in and provided them opportunity. This is not heresy, speculation, or “fear-mongering”…this is happening! The math on this is simple…the more Islamic immigrants and refugees we allow in our country, the more likely atrocities occur. This will not make for a safer country.
At a time when bad cops are shooting unarmed, innocent people and those that believe their lives matter simply because they exist, use these shootings as an excuse to “burn this bitch down”, more than ever we need a President that can see through the rhetoric and help find solutions to the blatant racism that has re-consumed this country. Simply put, I don’t see Hillary Clinton being that president. The Clintons’ have achieved their wealth, status, and power because of the status quo. So why would Hillary Clinton change the status quo? Unfortunately, the actions and protests we see now will only continue…and get worse…once Hillary Clinton becomes president. More and more privileged athletes will kneel during the National Anthem, hypocritically protesting the “system” and country that allows them to make ridiculous amounts of money playing a game while teachers are paid pennies to teach in cash-strapped school systems. More good cops are going to get hurt and killed because of the color of their profession. More innocent people are going to be harassed because of the color of their skin. A President Hillary Clinton won’t do anything to change that.
Come November, Americans will cast their vote for the lesser of the two evils that will become the President of the United States. That lesser evil will more than likely be Hillary Clinton. This means there will more than likely be four more years of the indifference and ineffectiveness that has come to define our modern federal government. Four more years for Islam-inspired terrorism to flourish within our borders. Four more years of blatant racism and hypocrisy to further undermine the underpinnings of this country. It is a bleak vision and future.
It’s been a bit since I’ve sat down and taken the time to write. In fact I didn’t realize how long it’s been until recently, when I read an article that highlighted how blogging is becoming recognized for its therapeutic attributes. Ironically, the reason I haven’t written is largely due to an overall dissatisfaction with life. While I have attempted to “pen” thoughts, inevitably those attempts turned into angst-driven, open-ended tirades that lacked any real cohesion or depth.
Arguably, hope is a universal human attribute. The idea that no matter how bad things are now, things will get better, transcends cultures, races, and sexes. Up until this point in life, I too believed in the concept of hope. Certainly, over time that belief has waned. Yet, it’s always been there as something to fall back on to help me get through the rough patches in life.
Lately though, a heavy dose of realism has set in. I’ve come to realize that “hope springs eternal” is a complete falsehood. Hope is nothing more than a coping mechanism. Arguably it’s a healthier coping mechanism. However, in the grand scheme of things, it’s no different than overeating, overdrinking, or over-“whatevering” to deal with life’s challenges.
I believe a more apt saying regarding hope is “hope is blinding”. It keeps us from seeing solutions. Hope has us focus on what could or should be. This prevents us from focusing on solutions that could truly make our lives better. Hope also encourages a “hands-off” approach to problem solving. Instead of taking responsibility for our actions and actively finding pro-active solutions, we resign ourselves to letting time, someone else, or some unproven existential entity fix our problems. This is ineffective…and arguably foolhardy, as we assume someone or something else has our own best interests at heart.
While the concept of hope is best debated in the realm of Philosophy and a lesser extent, Theology, it does have practical application. It’s election year in this country and certainly so far, there’s been much ado about who the next U.S. president will be. While initially considered a joke, Donald Trump has become a serious contender for the presidency (congrats GOP!). For those that keep telling themselves that he could never beat Hillary Clinton, keep in mind he was never supposed to beat Marc Rubio, Jeb Bush, or the “Green Eggs and Ham” reading Ted Cruz either. Let’s face it, Donald Trump has a very good chance of becoming the next President of the United States.
Donald Trump has built his campaign around a concept of hope that he can make America great again. It certainly sounds good and hey, it looks good on a hat too! The reality is though Donald Trump isn’t going to make America great again. If Hillary Clinton is elected president, she isn’t going to make America great again either. Americans tend to pin great hope on the fact that our president will make our lives better. This hope is unrealistic and inevitably, leads to great disappointment. Realistically, those that were disadvantaged before President Obama are more than likely no better off than they were eight years ago. They won’t be better off under Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton either. No amount of hope will change that.
The ills that challenge us as a people today are the same ills that have plagued mankind since our very inception. The names have changed, the faces are different, yet it’s the same old tired life-script. The hope that things will get better has done nothing to change the fact that overall…we are no more evolved than those that came before us. It also means we will never evolve beyond what we are today. At some point in life I feel the key to life is accepting and adapting to that which will not change. I feel I have finally come to that point in my life.
It’s been a bit since I’ve taken the time to write. Life has a way of keeping me occupied. I miss writing though. Writing is my means to purge all that is frustrating me. So much has happened. Most of it not so good. It’s the times that we live in. We have to pick and choose.
Another theater shooting…more innocent lives lost. Just because the 2nd Amendment says we have the right to bear arms. Never mind the fact our Forefathers created that amendment to justify the existence of civilian militias…of which we no longer need. How many more innocent citizens…children (remember Sandy Hook?) have to die?
On June 17th, 2015 nine human beings were shot to death at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina. Their “crime”….the color of their skin! How sad is it that in 2015 AD we continue to kill others based on the color of their skin! Even more heinous…murdered in a place of worship! I’m not a religious man by any stretch of the imagination. Yet even I can honor the concept of Sanctuary! Nine human beings…just trying to make sense of the shit word we live in…gunned down in a place of safety and security. Simply unacceptable…and so very sad. L
As the anniversary of Michael Brown Jr. and the Ferguson, MO riots befalls us, much ado has been made about the event a year later. Most of the commentary I’ve read commemorating this event has lauded the riots. A game changer, leading to bigger and better things. In some respects, yes it has. But overall…no. “Black Lives Matter”…the catch phrase of the new civil rights movement. The reality is this movement will never succeed. Its “heroes” are miscreants…Michael Brown Jr…Eric Garner…Freddie Gray. Criminals each and every one of them…worth more dead than alive. The fact that they were criminals is the part no one wants to talk about or mention.
Last but not least the GOP debates. I commend the Grand Obstructionist Party for moving forward and adapting. No longer are they blaming President Obama for all that ails this country. Now, they blame Hillary Clinton too! Way to go! Way to move forward! Not a damn one of you have anything original to offer other than to blame someone else! It absolutely disgusts me that Donald Trump is the frontrunner to be the figurehead of this country. It is even more disgusting that there are people in this country that actually support the piece of shit that is Donald Trump! I can only hope the closer we get to the presidential election clearer heads will prevail and Donald Trump (Ted Cruz as well) will fall to the wayside. I spent 12.5 years in the military promoting all that the United States of America has to offer. Like hell I will have sacrificed just so a piece of shit like Donald Trump or Ted Cruz can serve as this county’s figurehead!
